Sobhani made the remarks in an interview with the Syrian newspaper of al-Watan on the sidelines of a ceremony of marking the third martyrdom anniversary of Lieutenant General Qasem Soleimani and his entourage at the Baghdad International Airport on January 3, 2020.

The envoy said in the commemoration ceremony in Damascus that Syria and Iran enjoy good and strategic ties despite sanctions imposed on both nations, adding that the amicable relations grow and improve day by day.

On Sunday night, Iran’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Hossein Amirabdollahian and his Syrian counterpart Faisal Mekdad had a phone call and exchanged views on mutual ties and regional developments.

The two sides underlined that the high-ranking officials of both countries are determined to develop bilateral relationships.

The Syrian foreign minister appreciated the Islamic Republic of Iran’s constructive and effective role in the fight against terrorism as well as its assistance to resolve the political crisis in the Arab country. Mekdad also called on Tehran to play a key role in any political initiative to this end.

The phone conversation was held a few hours after the arrival of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Syrian Arab Republic Ayman Susan to Tehran to hold talks with the high-ranking authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Syrian Arab Republic issued a statement, declaring that Susan plans to discuss bilateral ties, the latest regional developments and the issues of mutual interests in the Iranian capital.
